Our Story

I am not a professional ukulele player or ever claimed to be one, but I do have a great passion for it. Here in Hawaii the public schools teach ukulele as a subject in the 4th grade. This is not where I first played, but it is where I first started to learn. Like most homes in Hawaii our family owned a ukulele and that's where it was placed in my hands. After the 4th grade, I really didn't play the ukulele until I took it as an elective in high school. While attending high school, I was approached by a teacher/ pastor inviting me to play ukulele on Sunday at the church that was on our campus. At the time, I knew I wasn't ready to be playing for any band, worship team or publicly for that matter. I was still at home getting yelled at from my mom to either stop play (cause I was terrible) or play in the closet.. So I went. Due to my teachers persistence, I eventually made it out of the closets and into the church pews. She gave me sheet music so I could play along with the worship team from where I sat. Of course eventually I made it up on stage and began playing with them on a regular basis. This is where my opportunities in life first started. Opportunities like growing my musical talents into other instruments, and given a confidence boost to achieve more.

My goal with the Ukulele Project Hawaii is to allow our keiki to have opportunities like I've had. For me, it took a wooden musical instrument with 4 strings to do that for me. What's to say it couldn't help out a young little boy or girl either. If you, or someone you know, needs "opportunities" in life or maybe would benefit emotionally from an ukulele, I would love to hear their story. Please share it with me. Either send me a video and written pledge for this person ukuleleprojecthawaii@gmail.com.

I will be personally reading each one and my goal is to have this completed by the end of April. So please.. Please.. Share this so you don't miss your opportunity to bless someone in need.

Mahalo..
